TVNZ Building Roof Restoration, Auckland

In 2015 TVNZ had a large refurbishment carried out by fletcher interiors. During the refurbishment Asphaltech had carried out large areas of the roof podiums on balconies with Neuchatel mastic asphalt.

In 2025 exactly 10 years later Asphaltech were called back as part of the cyclical maintenance programme to recoat the solar protection coating which was installed on top of the Neuchatel mastic asphalt. By proactively recoating the roof waterproofing the client has added to the longevity of the roo, it has been stated in the BRE digest that a properly maintained Neuchatel mastic asphalt roof will last for over 50 years.

During the maintenance process Asphaltech were asked to give their expert advice on areas of the large building that were not renewed in the 2015 upgrade. Our expert technical team were engaged to give advice and solutions.

WATERPROOFING SOLUTION

When considering a solution to these old existing roofs we had to consider that this was alive building with very expensive plant and equipment. Also, the roof areas could not be covered to provide temporary structure while the re-roofing works were going on. There were large areas of existing plants and equipment as well as multiple termination points, cladding, parapets and balustrades that were existing and could not be removed.

After analysing the risks and considering the best outcomes and warranties for the client we suggested to overlay the existing roofs with a new Neuchatel Armouplan Single-ply membrane. The membrane was laid over a fleece to isolate the products. The membrane was then mechanically fixed to the existing roof so that there was no use of flames when installing the membrane, the termination areas we’re finished by using pre coated metal and liquid applied membrane that was part of the armour plan system. The single-ply system was flame free.

Due to the success of the application the client engaged us and three more roofs that we refurbished as you can see from the photographs over the project the completed system and outcome as both aesthetically pleasing long lasting and provides the client with Peace of Mind that their building will be watertight and warranted for a further 20 years.
