The new carpark at Auckland International Airport is a significant addition to the transport hub, providing 2,500 parking spaces across a sprawling five-storey structure covering 75,000m². This facility not only meets the needs of travelers but also includes office spaces for the Airport Operations Centre and various airline tenancies. Given the scale and importance of the project, effective waterproofing was crucial.

WATERPROOFING SOLUTION

Our team at Asphaltech was tasked with the waterproofing of the carpark, focusing on the installation of a tapered warm roof system over the plant rooms and administration building. We utilized Sika Sarnafil membrane for the perimeter gutters on the main struture, which are renowned for their durability and resistance to the elements. The Sika Sarnafil membrane is hot air weldable, designed for direct exposure, and capable of withstanding UV rays and wind, making it ideal for Auckland’s variable climate.

Working in a live airport environment posed unique challenges. The site was exposed to high winds and unpredictable rain, and we were unable to use a tent for protection during installation. To navigate these conditions, we studied local weather patterns to ensure that our work could proceed safely and effectively.

The installation process involved several critical stages: first, we applied a vapour barrier followed by tapered insulation, and then a fleece separation layer. Finally, the Sika Sarnafil membrane was mechanically fixed to stringent requirements to combat wind uplift. This project demanded a high level of skill and experience, and our dedicated team rose to the occasion.
